Law Enforcement

The Law Enforcement Program provides an in-depth exploration of the criminal justice field, offering an overview of both the United States and Vermont legal systems. While the course emphasizes Vermont law enforcement efforts, students interested in careers in corrections, investigative work, federal agencies, crime scene investigation, or fish and wildlife enforcement are highly encouraged to attend. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with physical fitness activities, demonstrations, guest speaker presentations, field trips, and hands-on practical exercises. Major topics covered in the course include police communication, crime scene investigation, criminal law, motor vehicle law, interview and interrogation, patrol procedures, accident investigation, and the workings of courts and corrections. By the end of the course, students will be able to identify and explain the three components of the criminal justice system (police, courts, and corrections), understand the criminal justice process, recognize what constitutes a crime, and understand the psychological and sociological theories behind criminal behavior. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct mock traffic stops, respond to mock suspicious person scenarios, create a resume, and participate in a mock police oral board interview.
